Betting Sites And The WTO

When Antigua and Barbuda filed a complaint to the WTO against the United States that banning internet gambling was against their rights as members of the WTO, the ruling was in favor of them. Reacting to the ruling the US appealed but the WTO upheld the ruling given earlier more than once. As recently as on March 30, 2007, the WTO had upheld its earlier ruling once again. Antigua and Barbuda again filed a claim for US$ 3.4 billion requesting an authorization to give US patent and copyright laws a pass.

As late as 2007 in December, Antigua and Barbuda got nearly million from the WTO in trade sanctions allowing them to penalize the United States' trademark and copyright laws. The US admitted that their stand on internet gambling went against the WTO rules and regulations. Complications grew for the WTO as the United States allowed horse race betting within the country and Antigua's sanctions had to be in force till Americans could place bets with foreign betting sites and operators.

The United States has made concessions to other countries like those in the European Union for keeping out gambling services like betting sites by re-doing some points and fine tuning an agreement done way back in 1994.

Although betting can take place in the United States the financial part is still a bit cloudy. Financing and the payment to betting sites is not clear except in the state of Nevada and the betting capital of Las Vegas where betting and financial transactions related to it is perfectly legal.

Although at present the question of legality of internet gambling is under debate and not made clear, the law has not prosecuted anyone as yet. If people had placed their bets online or are placing it now is not known, but there has been no arrests so far. Betting sites are all over the internet and the punters use their services as the industry is growing in leaps and bounds. It was also argued by US lawmakers that a lot of money could come in as revenue to the United Sates government if internet gambling and the money transaction for betting sites were made legal.

More people would indulge in the sport and the betting turnover would swell. It is perfectly legal in the UK and other European countries where people have taken it as a past time or full time money making sport.
